How Google ranks local businesses, what your website needs that other sites do not, how to earn reviews within the rules, and how to turn nearby searches into booked jobs.
A local business website is judged by a simple test: when someone nearby searches for what you do, do they find you, trust you and contact you? A plumber, dentist, roofer or cleaning company does not need visitors from everywhere. It needs the right people within reach, ready to act.
That changes how the site should be built. A local customer often has an urgent need and compares just a few options, so your site has to work together with your Google listing and answer one more question than usual: do you serve my area?
Start with how Google ranks local businesses
Google says local results depend mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence.
- Relevance is how well your listing matches the search.
- Distance is how far you are from the person searching. You cannot change this, which is why accurate service areas matter.
- Prominence is how well-known you are, including links from other websites and your review count.
Google also says plainly that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. If anyone promises you the top spot on Maps for a fee, treat that as a warning sign.
Set up your Google Business Profile first
Your profile is often the first thing a local customer sees, sometimes before your website. Google's own advice is to:
- Verify your business.
- Keep your address, hours, category and other details complete and current.
- Add photos and videos of your real work.
- Ask for reviews and reply to the ones you get.
Then link the profile to the most relevant page on your site. If a person taps through and lands on a slow page with no phone number, you have wasted the hardest part of the work.
What a local business website needs that other sites do not
Your location details on every page
Put your business name, phone number and address or service area in the footer, and write them the same way everywhere, including on your Google profile and in directories. Make the phone number tappable.
A page for each main service
"Emergency plumbing," "water heater repair" and "drain cleaning" are different searches from people with different problems. Give each one a dedicated page explaining what you do, how it works and what to do next.
Honest service area pages
If you serve several towns, a page for each can help, but only if it has something real to say: jobs you have done there, local conditions, response times or a review from a customer in that town. Copying one page and swapping the town name adds no value, and Google's spam policies warn against mass-producing pages to manipulate rankings.
Structured data
LocalBusiness structured data lets you tell Google about details such as your address and opening hours. Your developer can add it in a small block of code. Its required fields are simply your business name and address, and hours and phone number are useful additions.
Proof from people nearby
A review from someone in the same town carries more weight with a local reader than a general rating. Photos of real jobs and your real team do the same. Local customers can often tell when a photo is stock.
How to get more reviews without breaking the rules
Reviews help you in two ways, since Google counts them toward prominence and customers read them before choosing. The simplest method is to ask every happy customer right after the job, with a direct link. It works even better when that request goes out automatically, so nobody has to remember.
Stay honest here. In the US, the FTC's rule bans fake reviews, including AI-generated ones, and bars offering incentives conditioned on a particular sentiment. So you can ask for an honest review, but do not pay for five stars. Reply to negative reviews calmly as well, since future customers will read how you respond.
Turn local visitors into booked jobs
Local customers often want an answer now, and may contact whoever responds first. Build your site for that moment:
- Make contact instant. A tap-to-call button that stays visible on phones is one of the simplest improvements you can make.
- Offer online booking or an instant quote. Plenty of people search after hours, when nobody can answer the phone.
- Reply automatically. Send a confirmation immediately so that people know you got their request, then follow up by email or text.
- Ask for photos. For trades, a photo upload on the form helps you give a better answer and shows that you take the job seriously.
For example, our roofing website build pairs free-inspection booking and photo uploads with automatic estimate follow-ups.
Bring past customers back
Many local businesses spend most of their marketing on strangers and overlook the people who already trust them. If your service repeats, your website can do this work for you. Our cleaning service website build reminds each customer when the next clean is due and links straight to booking. The same idea works for dental checkups, boiler servicing, lawn care, pest control and car servicing. Just make sure customers have agreed to hear from you, and always make it easy to opt out.
Your local business website checklist
- Your town or service area appears near the top of the home page.
- Your phone number is tappable and visible on every mobile page.
- Your name, address and phone number match your Google Business Profile.
- Every main service has its own page.
- Your hours are correct, including holidays.
- Real reviews and real photos appear close to your calls to action.
- Your form confirms that it worked, and you get notified at once.
- Pages load quickly on a phone. Test yours with our Page Speed Test.
Where to start
If you do only three things this week, verify and complete your Google profile, make your phone number tappable on every page, and ask your last ten happy customers for a review. Then look at service pages, which take longer but keep paying off.
